Backing Track
arranged and performed by J. Edwards
John’s notes; This global hit is right up there with the greatest of ‘power ballads’, Beautifully sung and recorded by Celine Dion and covered by artists like Jennifer Rush and so many more! This arrangement is in the original key of Ab/Fm. I have tried to keep it simple but worthy of learning because of the numerous ‘techniques’ I’ve included. Some students will recognise many of them i.e bends, hammers, pull off’s, slides etc. Practicing the chords is a worthwhile challenge too! The thing to concentrate on with an emotional ballad like this is the ‘feel’ in which you play each phrase. Some quiet (especially the fills) and some louder. This is called applying dynamics to your playing - very important, and takes practice! As usual I’ve arranged and included a bespoke backing track for you to use. Its royalty free (because I arranged & Played it) so your free to use it if you perform this tune to an audience etc. Finally watch the timing especially when playing the first few phrases. There is no percussion to guide you so count 1,2,3,4,-1,2. (I’ll teach you this tempo in class if your not sure). A slow tempo ballad like this is hard to TAB because the end result is dependant on how you choose to play it, and of course your technical level. It’s ok to play it minimal, sticking to the TAB or ‘improvise’ around the melody and fills using notes from the Ab/Fm major scale or chord tones/scales. For those students interested in ‘improvising’ I have attached the Ab Major scale to guide you. Whatever way you decide to play this tune the end result will be unique to you so enjoy!
