John’s notes; I was asked to arrange a solo guitar version of this well known Christmas carol for a Christmas church performance. its full of interesting ‘techniques’ that will serve you well in your future songs.Take special care to notice that many ‘chords’ are played as ‘partial chords’. This is a common technique when the melody needs to be prominent over the harmony. Also, note the ‘ring’ symbol. This provides a pedal note (back ground harmony) to what ever note follows. A good example is in a typical ‘blues’ tune when the single ‘A’ string will be played and let ring thus providing a back ground harmony for a melodic ‘lick’ or phrase that would normal require a full ‘A’ chord background harmony. What is a D7 chord? (otherwise known as a ‘dominant’ 7) is simply a normal D Major chord but the root note (1) is lowered by two steps to become the flat 7 th of the D scale. This creates a ‘bluesy / jazzy sound to the chord, and is found in all genres of music.
